Eisner Nominations!
Today (assuming I write this post quickly enough, Greenwich Mean Time) is the one-year anniversary of the publication of The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage. So it is extra-gobsmackingly amazing to be able to announce that is has been nominated for two Eisner Awards: Best New Graphic Album and Best Writer/Artist.
It’s fairly obvious that much of the way the comic is drawn is a shameless rip-off adoring tribute to the work of Will Eisner; I’m pretty much out of words to express how honoured, delighted, and astonished I am by this. This is a fairly good result for an imaginary comic I wasn’t really drawing… I feel like I threw myself at the ground and missed and am now soaring through the air.
In other news, Lovelace and Babbage will soon be available in Spanish! I’ll be in Barcelona next weekend for a launch at legendary comic emporium Gigamesh at 6pm on Saturday the 30th of April.
I’ll also be in the somewhat less Mediterranean environs of Sheffield on Tuesday the 3rd of May ; Cambridge on the 11th of May, and Oxford on the 18th of May.
My latest Giant Monster work can be seen in cinemas by the way, if you were wondering why the silence was so pervasive on this here website it’s partly on account of that was a heck of a lot of work!
I am a serious–fanatic?–devotee of graphic fiction and nonfiction, as well as cartoons, comics, and animation. Ms. Padua, I just want to say your book is a work of imaginative genius. Yes, genius. I also adore your sense of humor. I love Will Eisner too, and you richly deserve any award bearing his name.
The book is superb, as is the app and everything you’ve written and drawn about L and B. I think you should seriously consider making the adventures in the Pocket Universe into a movie. Can you imagine the Analytical Engine rendered in CGI?! It seemes to me that the adventures would make a fantastic surrealist/steampunk stylized movie, with a basis in fact (many of the footnotes could be incorporated as dialogue), but with the thrilling (and more satisfying) flights of fancy explored in your universe. How about writing a screenplay as your next project? You could be the writer and artistic designer!
Dear Sydney Padua. I’ve recently read your book. Here I wanted to write “please please be my BFF” but didn’t want to creep you out so didn’t. Incredibly, I happened to be in Barcelona on May 1 with your book in my suitcase! How amazing is that? Maybe a little amazing? Just a tiny bit? I’m not usually in Barcelona! Or ever! While reading your book! And with no idea that you had been there just the day before!
I ramble. What I really wanted to say is, I loved loved loved your book and thank you so much for writing it.
By the way, my favourite drawing in the book is Queen Victoria sitting down in full confidence that a chair would appear.
Do I read as a mad stoker? I’m just an excited fan. I’m a computer programmer, Lovelace and Babbage are my long-time heroes, finding out about your book made me like wwwwwwhat I want this! Why don’t I have this! And now I do.
After finding your website online several years ago, and making a mental note to chase down your book when it came out… life happened and that didn’t. UNTIL a GREAT friend of mine was looking for something to get me for a birthday and STUMBLED ACROSS THE BOOK. So I have it now! and have just finished it! and love it in print as much as I loved it online. It is wonderful; thank you! (1)
(1) I wish you the very best on the Eisner Award (2). Your book is a delight and it definitely deserves all the accolades we can shower upon you and it.
(2) both of them!
Yes! I wear my Ada Lovelace tee with pride!
Were your drawings terrible, your dialogue would more than compensate; if your dialogue was flat and dull, your drawings would more than compensate; since both are wonderfully witty and elegant, I hope you win. I only regret that I can’t put a footnote on this comment as an homage.
(See above for footnotes!)
Congrats! As someone fairly new to the blog, it’s good to see you getting recognition! I’ve hurled the book at anybody with poor enough judgement to be within a 10-foot radius of me recently with the loud command of “READ THIS AND BE HAPPY.” All those who have taken this very sane advice and not run screaming from the room have said they did indeed end up happy. Congratulations again!
Congratulations for Eisner nomination!
Speaking of the “Giant Monster work”, IMDB does not show you in cast credits for that movie. What gives?
Congratulations! Couldn’t happen to a better non-ish-comic.
I also get a little bit excited whenever someone mentions the book to me. On the one hand, there’s obviously the “where have YOU been” impulse, but on the other, great to hear it still so well received.
