*Sigh*
Sorry folks, looks like I need a new hard drive… and just back from Ireland and off to Denmark straight away for a couple of weeks, for my Celebrated Lectures on Bovine Locomotion as Interpreted by the Animation Artist, It’s Attendant Joys and Sorrows. Should have the ol’ machine up and running by then though so this interruption shouldn’t go on too long! Life does interfere with comics so!
While I fiddle tiny screws and drop them under the sofa, please enjoy stunning super-duper hires images of the Magnificent Difference Engine, and some great video:
Today’s Google Doodle (at least the one presented to U.S. users) celebrates the 197th birthday of Ada Lovelace!
See http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2012/12/honouring-computings-1843-visionary.html
Kevin Laughlin designed it. It shows Ada writing algebra, with a quill pen, on what I think is intended to be a long string of Jacquard cards. (That’s not how you punch Jacquard cards but, hey, artistic license.) The cards loop around to form the cursive word “Google.” Balloons touching the word contain a Hollerith punchcard reader, an electronic computer programmed by plugboard, a microcomputer CRT display, and a modern laptop and tablet issuing musical notes.

Happy Birthday Ada Lovelace
Check out the Google masthead today! You’ll appreciate it!
We are very patient folk.
The xRez link recompenses us adequately and more while we wait for free ice cream.
I love your comics and can’t wait for Lovelace and Babbage (and George) to return. Rock those moving cows in Denmark.
I feel your pain. I just went through/am stuck in the Hard drive/powecord/laptop battery hyeck.
Aaaargh! Rogue apostrophe alert! (Just there, in front of “Attendant Joys and Sorrows”.) Blast it with the eraser gun before it breeds!
Aww, that’s a bummer. I hope you can rescue your work from the old hard drive??!?
I shall endeavor to wait patiently, consoling myself with repeat views of the previous episodes. :-)
