The Thrilling Adventures Of Lovelace and Babbage

LovelaceandBabbagemockup Now On Sale! Click to go the book's website... “An audaciously imagined alternate history of the invention of the computer . . . . Like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, readers can get lost in the explosion of imagery and overwhelming notes that document the history that never was. A prodigious feat of historically based fantasy that engages on a number of levels." red_starKirkus (Starred Review) "...a must-have for anyone who enjoys getting lost in a story as brilliant in execution as conception... permeated by delightful illustrations, obsessive foot- and endnotes, and a spirit of genuine inventiveness, it’s an early candidate for the year’s best." red_starPublishers Weekly (Starred Review)

THE THRILLING ADVENTURES OF LOVELACE AND BABBAGE

origin_004longMy idle-hours webcomic started by accident, continued as an excuse to procrastinate on more serious work, and eventually became a 320-page graphic novel. It spent over six months on the New York Times Bestseller list, won the British Society for the History of Mathematics Neumann Prize, was an Eisner nominee for Best New Work and Best Writer/Artist, and was one of the Guardian’s Paperbacks of the Year. Occasional episodes still appear, albeit much more slowly now that it’s what I’m actually supposed to be working on. Its website is here.

PAST PROJECTS

THE NATURAL HISTORY OF SELBORNE

birdiesBetween 2008 and 2009 I blogged daily transcripts of 40 years of the journals of 18th century naturalist Gilbert White. In his modest, poetic style he recorded the migrations of birds, blooming of flowers, odd weather events and scenes of village life. It is now a permanent website searchable by date and subject.

AGRICULTURAL REPORT

agreportIn 2004 I sketched out a storyboard for a little film that I meant to use to teach myself how to animate on a computer. The eventual result (with much help!) was Agricultural Report, a 2.5 minute short that has screened at over 200 festivals and won several awards, including Best Short Film at the Taormina Film Festival and Audience Award for Best First Film at AnimaMundi Brazil. It was also nominated for Best Short Film by ASIFA Hollywood’s Annie Awards. Watch on Vimeo.
